Hepatitis B is a viral infection that attacks the liver and can cause both acute and chronic disease. It is a potentially life-threatening liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and a major global health problem.

The virus is transmitted through contact with the blood or other body fluids such as saliva of an infected person.

According to WHO, An estimated 257 million people are living with hepatitis B virus infection (defined as hepatitis B surface antigen positive).

Hepatitis B is an important occupational hazard for health workers.

Laboratory diagnosis of hepatitis B infection focuses on the detection of the hepatitis B surface antigen HBsAg. WHO recommends that all blood donations be tested for hepatitis B to ensure blood safety and avoid accidental transmission to people who receive blood products.

The hepatitis B vaccine is the mainstay of hepatitis B prevention. Presently no cure. A vaccine against hepatitis B has been available since 1982. The vaccine is 95% effective in preventing infection and the development of chronic disease and liver cancer due to hepatitis B. It is recommended for everyone to take the vaccine.
